Inspiration is the lifeblood of music. Whether in the form of an experience, a feeling, or a predecessor’s style, you can hear influences reflected in newer pieces creating a chain from one musician to the next. It is this idea of building on what came before and finding echoes of one piece in another that the 18th Street Singers’ winter concert “Because” explores.
Imagine how “Singet dem Herrn” by Johann Sebastian Bach touched Mozart when he first heard it. Consider how Uģis Prauliņš’ experiences as a boy chorister and later a rock musician shaped his masterwork “Missa Rigensis." Hear how African American spirituals have evolved into modern concert music in “Crucifixion (‘He Never Said a Mumblin’ Word’)” by Adolphus Hailstork, "Praise the Lord" by Florence Price, and "We Shall Walk Through the Valley" by Undine Smith Moore. And parents will have no doubt how Eric Whitacre was influenced reading "Goodnight Moon" to his own children in the first-ever choral adaptation of that book. “Because” is a choral journey that touches countless genres; each piece made possible, more complex, and better by the inspiration of those who came before.
And just like the sounds in this concert series, the 18th Street Singers are what we are today “Because” of our many musical influences and all that our wonderful community has shared with us. Join us Friday January 27th and Saturday January, 28th for an evolutionary thread of music and take time to consider how inspiration from others in our own lives is carried with us every day. Can you hear it?
