Looking backward, time can feel amorphous and inevitable, when it's actually a collection of discrete moments come and gone. Each season is made up of individual rehearsals, each song is made up of individuals moments and notes, and each of our lifetimes unfolds one day at a time. As we celebrate our 15th anniversary year, In This Moment will stop time for a few hours to reflect on this rich life of moments (musical and otherwise) we are in the midst of living.
In this Moment balances the phrases “memento mori” (the recognition of death that brings meaning to life) and “carpe diem” (an encouragement to seize the day) by juxtaposing Howells’s "Requiem" and "Take Him Earth For Cherishing" with exquisite arrangements of the songs of Ben Folds and Dolly Parton. At the program's opening, the lyrics “in the middle of a life that’s as complicated as everyone else’s” begin our musical journey of introspection into the ephemerality of time, our shared struggles and joys, and an urgent calling to be present.
Now entering our 15th year, the 18th Street Singers will use our winter concert to reflect on the relationships, seasons, and moments that have marked this passage of time. Join us Friday, January 24th and Saturday, January 25th for In This Moment as it urges us to embrace this moment, and this moment, and this moment — and all of the moments to come — one at a time.
