Metamorphosis: 18th Street Singers Winter Concert

  • First Trinity Lutheran Church 501 4th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20001 United States (map)

Concert description:

Transformation can be subtle or seismic—a shift in perspective, a moment of clarity, or a leap into the unknown. Over the past 20 years, the 18th Street Singers have embraced this spirit of metamorphosis, growing from a fledgling ensemble into a thriving choral community.

Through four thematic sections, we invite you to journey with us as we explore:

Taking Flight: Humanity’s unrelenting drive to grow, evolve, and seek something greater.
Looking for Meaning: Introspective works that delve into self-discovery and development.
Remixed: A celebration of genre-bending creativity, blending sounds and styles in unexpected ways.
Finding Purpose: Uplifting pieces that challenge us to confront injustice, honor loss, and imagine a better world.

From the restless drive to take flight in Robert Schumann’s “An die Sterne” and “Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine” by Eric Whitacre, to the quiet search for meaning as in Jacob Collier’s “World O World,” we reflect on who we’ve been and imagine what we might become. Pieces of resilience and hope remind us how music can confront injustice (“we cannot leave” by ted hearne), honor loss (“Meet Me Here” by Craig Hella Johnson), and inspire change (“How can I keep from singing?” by Robert Lowry”). Together, we’ll sing of transformation—both within ourselves and in the world we strive to create.

Join us on Friday, January 31st (in-person) at 7:30pm and Saturday, February 1st (in-person & FREE livestream) at 4:30 pm at First Trinity Lutheran Church or livestream, as we honor who we’ve been, celebrate who we are, and imagine what we will become. After 20 years, Metamorphosis isborn of introspection, resilience, and hope—with music that dares us to reflect inward and act outward for the world we hope one day will be.
